Pest Alert - Asian Cockroach
A new species of cockroach is becoming more common in the Greater Houston Area -
The Asian Cockroach .
Asian cockroaches are almost identical to German cockroaches in appearance. They are small, slender and tan with two black stripes on the back of the head area. Chemical analysis by gas chromatography will confirm the species. However, there are also slight morphological differences between B. asahinai and B. germanica. Asian cockroach adults have longer and narrower wings than those of German cockroaches. In most cases, identification is established by the behavior and location of the roaches. Specifically, Asian roaches are capable of sustained flight and normally live in grass and/or leaves; German roaches are not capable of sustained flight and are found residing in our homes, kitchens.
Our technicians have discovered that this species has been found through out the Interstate I-10 corridor from the Barker reservior to the Memorial Park area. This includes the Katy, Bear Creek, Memorial, Heights, and Uptown areas. The area of reported sightings seem to growing seasonally.
The reduction of conducive condtions such as leaf debris and exterior lighting may aid in the control of these pests, although a chemical application to the exterior seems to yield the best control thus far. If you are finding small "flying roaches" on the exterior of your structure, or have noted a few dead small roaches near doors or windows, it is quite possible you are dealing with the Asian Cockroach rather than the small German Roaches common in apartments and restaurants. If in doubt, please save a few specimens and call our office for assistance.
